Domestic violence is a scourge well known to legal circles, but the challenges in tackling it remain numerous. Recently, the concept of coercive control has been used in several countries to try to improve the scope of criminal law in this area. Canada is part of this trend, with a bill relating to coercive control currently under study.
The presentation focuses on this criminalization effort by addressing four aspects:
- The definition of coercive control
- International criminalization
- Canadian Bill C-322
- Issues relating to criminalization and the preliminary fallout from the United Kingdom.
Speaker:
Amélie Lamontagne holds a master's degree in criminology. She worked
for several years with women victims of domestic violence, both in
Quebec and in Scotland and in United Kingdom, where she provided
support to victims in criminal court. She recently worked with the MH2
Alliance on the development of a support ecosystem for victims of
domestic violence suffering from traumatic brain injury. She is currently
completing a doctorate in law at UQAM, where she is focusing on the
criminalization of coercive control.
